METROPOLITAN PLANNING COMMISSION ENDORSES LADY’S ISLAND TRAFFIC STUDY

In a unanimous 6-0 vote Monday evening, the Metropolitan Planning Commission advanced the Lady’s Island Corridor Plan, the long range traffic study of Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island and the surrounding area.

The recommendation is an advisory opinion, and will now be sent on to Beaufort City Council and Beaufort County Council for their consideration.

The study and recommendations, carried out by the City of Beaufort in conjunction with Beaufort County, received the support of the Sea Island Corridor Coalition at the MPC meeting.

SEA ISLAND CORRIDOR COALITION CERTIFIED AS TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATION BY IRS

The application of the Sea Island Corridor Coalition for tax-exempt non-profit status was recently aproved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Mary Somerville, a director of the Coalition, said the IRS action was an important milestone for the Coalition.

“With 501(C)(3) status,” she said, “we’re able to accept donations that are tax-deductible to the donor. To be able to solicit and accept such funds is important to our Coalition, which until now has been funded by contributions by the group’s Directors.

“Moving forward, we will need to rely on public support if we are to continue our work, and we are confident the community and othes who care about the Sea Island Parkway Corridor will respond,” she said.

WHITEHALL PRINCIPALS IN BEAUFORT FOR INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS

MidCity Real Estate Partners, the likely developer for Whitehall Plantation, was in Beaufort last week for informal meetings with city officials regarding their plans.

The meetings were largely exploratory, with MidCity spending time to understand the recently-enacted Beaufort Code and gather data regarding the real estate market here.

MidCity Principal Kirk Demetrops told the Coalition he expected to be in Beaufort more frequently as work on initial plans progresses, and repeated his interest in meeting with the Coalition members soon.

Coalition leaders had suggested that that meeting take place as soon as conceptual plans were in hand, expected to be in August.
